Woman, 25, Nabbed For Infanticide

POLICE in Shiwangándu in Muchinga Province have arrested a 25-year-old woman for alleged infanticide.
Muchinga Province police deputy commissioner Chilije Nyirenda confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services in Chinsali.
Mr Nyirenda said the woman has also been charged with concealing the birth of her baby boy.
He said Priscilla Lunda, a bartender at one of the drinking places at Mutambo trading area, is alleged to have aborted her seven-month-old pregnancy and threw away the foetus in the nearby bush.
Mr Nyirenda said members of the public who saw Priscilla pregnant were surprised to notice later that she was suddenly not looking pregnant. When asked, Priscilla failed to explain what had happened to her pregnancy.
The matter was reported to the police, after which Priscilla led the officers to Chandaula Village, about five kilometres from Matumbo where a foetus was picked from.
The foetus was found lying on the ground and wrapped in a polythene sack.
Mr Nyirenda said a postmortem has already been conducted on the foetus and that Priscilla, who is remanded at Nambuluma Police Station, has since been charged with infanticide and concealing the birth of her baby.
She will appear in court soon.
