A 22-YEAR-OLD housewife of Chingola has testified against her 25-year-old husband in a case in which he is charged with breaking into a house and stealing household goods worth KR1, 105.
Bwalya Sembulo Chipulu is charged with breaking into a building with intent to commit a felony.
Particulars of the offence are that Chipulu, on May 1, 2013 in Ndola, did break and enter the house of his older sister Annie Chipulu with intent to steal.
Chipulu is alleged to have stolen two pots, a blanket, a mat and a matress, altogether valued at KR1, 105.
When the matter came up for trial before Chingola resident magistrate Angela Kafunda yesterday, Evelyn Majima of house number two Mwapoleni in Soweto said she was present when Chipulu allegedly broke into his sister’s house and stole the goods.
Ms Majima said she decided to testify against her husband because he allegedly disregarded her advice not to steal the goods.
“He [Chipulu] broke the lock to Annie Chipulu’s house, got the goods and we went in different directions,” Ms Majima said.
She said she went straight to report the matter to Ms Chipulu in Buyantashi.
“I did not know where he took the goods,” Ms Majima told the court.
She said Chipulu allegedly ran away when the neighbourhood watch officers attempted to apprehend him but he was later arrested at his mother-in-law’s house.
And Ms Chipulu told the court that on the material day, she had taken her father to the hospital as he was feeling unwell.
“I spent the night at the hospital but when I returned home around 17:00 hours, I found that the house had been broken into,” Ms Chipulu said.
She said her sister-in-law (Ms Majima) informed her that Chipulu had broken into her house.
“She told me that she was present when her husband was breaking into the house,” Ms Chipulu said.
Ms Kafunda adjourned the case to July 3, 2013 for mention and July 15, 2013 for continued trial.
