INSPECTOR General of Police Stella Libongani has described marriage as a unifying event.
Speaking at the wedding reception of Zambia Police Service public relations officer Elizabeth Kanjela and World Bank employee Kelvin Ng’andu at Mulungushi Service Club in Lusaka on Friday, Libongani said by marrying, the couple had brought different families together.
“You are bringing two families together, so you need to make sure that your love radiates to all your family members, to all those who expect to receive of that love,” she said.
Libongani said a strong marriage required commitment, openness and sacrifice.
“Your coming together as a couple demands a lot of commitment; commitment in terms of openness, you ought to be open to each other…there shouldn’t be anything which you should hide from each other,” she said.
She urged the couple to be faithful to each other, ensuring that they live by the biblical standards of marriage.
“It is also necessary because today we are faced with the pandemic HIV/AIDS, that can be very devastating and for a beautiful couple like yourselves, we want to see that you’ll be faithful to each other and thrive in your marriage,” she said.
Libongani also urged the couple to support one another and observe positive cultural practices that would help them stay together.
“You need to have a lot of common ground, pray together, play together, do everything together. You’ll be able to bond and that bond will strengthen your relationship,” she said.
She said by marrying Elizabeth, Ng’andu had joined the police family.
“But I want to remind you that this family is one which has values, so…you will just be like all of us. We’ll not expect to hear things, Mr Ng’andu, which are alien to our family; things like GBV (gender-based violence). We do not want to hear such. So support your wife, Elizabeth; (and) Elizabeth, support your husband,” said Libongani.
The colourful wedding reception was attended by among others, deputy commerce minister Richwell Siamunene, agriculture permanent secretary Siazongo Siakalenge, former secretary to the Cabinet Evans Chibiliti and several senior police officers.
Earlier in the day, Ngandu and Elizabeth exchanged vows in a brief ceremony at the University of Zambia Chapel in Lusaka.

Prior to this marriage, Kanjela was once married but later divorced for allegedly seeing another man.
