A GROUP of artistes from various disciplines yesterday launched a campaign to remove Mulenga Kapwepwe as National Arts Council chairperson.

Led by singer Saboi Imboela, the artistes registered their signatures on a form to be presented to arts minister in two weeks time.
Among the musicians were Jordan Katembula (JK) who told The Post that Kapwepwe has not protected the industry and that she had overstayed in her position.
“She has overstayed, 14 years is too much. I am sure there can be someone who can run the arts in the country better than her because personally I have not seen any changes in 14 years. We don’t even understand how these guys vote themselves back into positions. We the artistes form NAC, without us, there can’t be NAC,” Katembula said.

He said the best thing that Kapwepwe should do was to step down and begin advising young ones instead.

According to the petition, Kapwepwe had failed to improve the welfare of the artistes.

“Her views on how to run the arts in the country and the artistes’ views fundamentally differ and cannot be harmonised,” read the petition in part.

And Saboi said the artistes had two weeks to endorse their signatures before the petition is presented to tourism and arts minister Sylvia Masebo.

When contact for a comment, Kapwepwe could not pick the phone.
