Chief Mukuni:Tradition Must Be Respected Because It Has Been There Before Govts Where Formed

Senior Chief Mukuni of the Toka-Leya people of Southern Province has argued that the recognition of a Chief by the Head of State alone does not make one a Chief in the eyes of the subjects.
Chief Mukuni explains that in the eyes of the people there are many processes required to be followed for one to be Chief of which recognition by the Head of State is just one of them.
Chief Mukuni told QFM News in an interview that Tradition must be respected because it has always been there before governments where formed.
He states that one is a Chief in the eyes of his people more than the recognition by the Head of State.
Chief Mukuni further explains that the reason why Chiefs are gazetted is to enable them get allowances from the government.
He adds that one can be Chief without getting subsidies from the government as long as he is recognized by his people.
On Monday, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Professor Nkandu Luo told a media briefing that as long as one is not recognized by the head of state they do not qualify to be Chief under the Chiefs Act.
