CATHERINE Phiri has hailed the World Boxing Council (WBC) for ordering a rematch against Christina McMahon of Ireland.
And the Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZPBWCB) have described the WBC decision as transparent.
Catherine said in Lusaka yesterday that she is ready to face McMahon for the second time.
The WBC silver bantamweight champion vowed to pound the Irish boxer who was declared winner during the May 2 fight at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
“I am excited about the news. I will take it [rematch] seriously because such are rare opportunities. I thank WBC and the judges who reviewed the DVD.
“My prayer is that our stable wins the bid to stage the fight in Zambia. I still have a lot to offer to my fans. I want them to judge me with their own judgement,” Catherine said.
The judges scored 95-95, 94-97 and 95-97 during the fight in favour of McMahon, a decision which prompted Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions to protest.
Meanwhile, ZPBWCB secretary John Shipanuka said WBC’s ruling is final.
Shipanuka urged Catherine to prepare adequately for the rematch.
“The decision is a plus to us. For them [WBC] to call for a rematch that means they saw something wrong after reviewing the video. It’s good news for the boxing fraternity,” he said.
