AFTER the death of her husband in April, a Chazanga woman says she is not at peace because his relatives have not cleansed her. Precious Chanda, 30, is seeking a court order for her late husband’s family to cleanse so that she can live at peace. She said she feels tormented whenever she sees her late husband’s clothes. Chanda was testifying in case in which she sued Christopher Njobvu, 47, her late husband’s brother to cleanse her. “I feel tormented when I see my late husband’s clothes.

I feel sad to see my son wear his shoes. He (my son) usually asks me when his father is coming back,” she said. Chanda told the court that she is wondering why her late husband’s relatives have not cleansed her even after they promised to do so within 90 days after his death. She told the court that Njobvu and other family members have been giving excuses whenever she asks when they will cleanse.

“All I want is for them to tell me that I am free, they should also come home to get my late husband’s clothes so that I can have a peace of mind,” Chanda told the court. And Njobvu told the court that the family is willing to cleanse Chanda as per tradition.

He charged that delays in cleansing Chanda are as a result of her unwillingness to cooperate. “We set a date on several occasions to conduct the cleansing ceremony but Chanda has been defying all the dates we have given. I cannot do the cleansing alone but I need other family members to be around,” Njobvu said.
