WORLD BANK PRAISES PRESIDENT SATA
LUSAKA, Thursday, September 5, 2013 – His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, President of the Republic of Zambia, has thanked the World Bank for their continued show of confidence and support in his leadership.
This is after World Bank country director for Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, Kundhavi Kadiresan, congratulated the Head of State for the successful co-hosting of the UNWTO General Assembly as well as the leadership he is providing in the development of the road sector [Link Zambia 8000 project].
“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the successful hosting of the just ended UNTWO General Assembly in Livingstone and Victoria Falls town. This was a milestone for Zambia’s tourism industry and will trigger a revolution in the development of the sector,” stated Kadiresan’s congratulatory message to President Sata in part.
“Your vision as stated in the closing speech of the UNWTO General Assembly will provide the foundation for the development of this sector. We are encouraged by the leadership that you have provided to the development of the road sector and we hope that the tourism sector will also benefit from your direct engagement.
“A momentum has been created by the successful hosting of the UNWTO conference. Therefore, I look forward to exploring with the Government the exciting opportunities that open up for Zambia in tourism.”
Kadiresan assured the President that the World Bank is readily available to continue deepening its partnership with the Government to promote the development of both areas.
In response, President Sata thanked the World Bank for their continued show of confidence and support in his administration and leadership.
The President said the Government will continue to explore various possibilities that will contribute to the improvement of the livelihoods of the Zambian people.
“Whilst embracing many initiatives to deal with poverty alleviation, unemployment and other challenges, we require urgent and practical interventions to stamp out corruption, greed and selfishness if real and equitable growth is to be recorded,” President Sata said.
“Accountability and good performance shall continue to be the focus of the PF Government in order to effectively respond to current and future challenges and efficiently bridge gaps in the implementation of the national development agenda.
“In this vein, Government will expedite the process of establishing a government wide monitoring and evaluation system which will enhance resource allocation and evaluation system to projects and tracking of policy performance, including support of results based management.”
President Sata said the PF Government will continue to improve the management of the economy to ensure an inclusive growth through creating more jobs and most important of all reduction in the high poverty levels.
