A 30-YEAR-OLD woman of Lusaka’s Chainda township who was badly burnt with hot water by her husband on Thursday evening says she will not continue with the marriage and that he should face the law.
A check by The Post at Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital’s surgical ward found Mary Nanyangwe in pain.
Nanyangwe sustained serious burns to her face, ear, stomach, back and minor burns on her private parts.
“I feel much better today. I am eating, I can go to the toilet and I am able to bath,” Nanyangwe said. “I think I am just tired of this whole thing. My husband has always been beating me…I am tired. Pa last banganipaye (eventually, he may kill me).”
Asked what led her husband to scald her, Nanyangwe said, “I think it’s jealousy…he found me with his brother in the house and thought otherwise. He started beating me and when he saw hot water on the brazier, he took the whole pot and poured the hot water on me. He has always been beating me. Last time when we had a misunderstanding, he beat me again on my private parts.”
Nanyangwe, who has been married for 14 years, said she would not forgive her husband this time around, adding that the last time he badly beat her up, she pleaded with police officers to release him.
She said it was unfortunate that her husband’s relatives had not been to the hospital to see her and that her children were being taken care of by neighbours.
“I have three children. The first born is 12 years old, the second is seven and the last is three. Right now they are being looked after by my neighbour. My husband drinks too much…why would he even suspect me of having an affair with his own brother?” she said.
Nanyangwe, who works as a maid in Lusaka’s Avondale area, said it was sad that she would not be able to go for work because of what had happened to her.
Her husband, Patrick Sinyangwe, is detained at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police station.
